About JA Resorts & Hotels

A Legacy of Hospitality,
Rooted in Care

JA Resorts & Hotels is a proudly homegrown hospitality brand founded in Dubai in 1981, offering a distinctive collection of five-star resorts and hotels across the UAE, the Maldives, and UK. The brand is part of the DUTCO Group of Companies, established in 1947, one of the UAE’s most respected diversified business groups. JA Resorts & Hotels is known for creating thoughtful, experience-led stays rooted in care, authenticity, and a deep sense of place designed to delight families, couples, leisure travellers, and business guests across generations.

JA Resorts & Hotels was established in 1981, originally operating under Dutco Hotels. That same year, the company opened two of Dubai’s earliest resort landmarks:

Jebel Ali Beach Hotel at Jebel Ali Beach
Hatta Fort Hotel in the Hajar Mountains

These properties laid the foundation for what would become one of the UAE’s most enduring hospitality brands.

JA Resorts & Hotels is owned by the DUTCO Group, a UAE-based group founded in 1947. DUTCO has played a significant role in Dubai’s growth and development, with businesses spanning construction, real estate, oil and gas, manufacturing, trading, and hospitality.

Today, JA Resorts & Hotels operates nine distinctive properties across three countries:

United Arab Emirates – beachfront resorts, city hotels, mountain escapes, and integrated resort destinations
Maldives – a refined retreat offering natural island luxury, wellness, and cultural immersion
United Kingdom – heritage-led hotels set within iconic Scottish countryside estates and historic city locations

Each property reflects JA’s commitment to genuine hospitality, meaningful experiences, and long-standing relationships with guests and communities.

JA Resorts & Hotels is guided by a simple belief: to help people feel truly welcome, cared for, and connected.

The brand’s purpose is to build emotional value by creating, curating, and delivering experiences that delight all generations—whether through family holidays, destination celebrations, sporting pursuits, wellness escapes, or quiet moments of retreat.

The brand is led by Chairman Ahmed Baker, who has overseen JA Resorts & Hotels’ growth from a local hospitality venture into an internationally recognised brand, while preserving its family-led culture and values.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Chairman Baker consistently credits:

• The visionary leadership of the UAE
• The support of national institutions
• And most importantly, the people of JA, whom he proudly considers family

Their dedication continues to shape the brand’s reputation for warmth, care, and credibility.

JA Resorts & Hotels stands apart for its:

• Homegrown UAE heritage
• Diverse destinations and experiences
• Long-standing commitment to people and place
• Balance of tradition and progress
• Focus on emotional connection, not just luxury

This is hospitality shaped by legacy and delivered with purpose.

It was the early 19th century, and Major General Robert Walter Stuart, the 11th Lord Blantyre, had seen much of the world.

From the battlefields of Europe to the banks of the Nile, he had travelled far and wide, collecting stories, inspiration, and a longing for a place to call home. In 1828, the first stones of Mar Hall were laid, a grand vision brought to life by the renowned architect Sir Robert Smirke. Inspired by his travels, Lord Blantyre dreamed of a house that would stand as a beacon of hospitality, a place where family and friends could gather, where the echoes of adventure would meet the comforts of home.

Adversity and Resilience: A House Built on Love

In 1830, while in Belgium, Lord Blantyre was accidentally shot and killed, leaving his dream unfinished. Though construction slowed, it did not stop. His wife, Fanny, took the reins, ensuring that Mar Hall became more than just a house, it became a home, filled with warmth, laughter, and the spirit of a family determined to continue what had been started. For 30 years, she shaped the interiors, filled its halls with life, and nurtured the gardens that today stand as living tributes to resilience and renewal.

A Gathering Place for the Great and Good

Mar Hall quickly became a social hub, a place where the elite of Scotland and beyond would gather. Stories of grand balls, roaring fires, and lively debates fill its history. There were whispered tales of secret romances, political intrigue, and the comings and goings of Scotland’s great industrialists and aristocrats. As the Clyde’s shipbuilding industry flourished, Mar Hall’s windows overlooked a river that carried the lifeblood of a changing world.

A New Chapter: From Private Residence to a Place of Care

Time, however, brings change. The 20th century saw Mar Hall shift from a private residence to a new role, serving as a hospital during wartime and later as a place of retreat and relaxation. The grand halls that once hosted dignitaries now provided comfort and care to those in need. Though its purpose evolved, its essence remained the same, Mar Hall was always a place of sanctuary, of welcome, of belonging.

In the years that followed, the house gently faded with time. But in 2004, a new chapter began. After a thoughtful restoration, Mar Hall was lovingly brought back to life as a hotel. In May 2010, the estate welcomed another milestone with the opening of the 18-hole Earl of Mar Golf Course, designed by David Thomas Jr. A tribute to the land’s rich history.

Restoring Grandeur: A New Era for Mar Hall

As we step into 2025, Mar Hall is undergoing its most ambitious transformation yet. A £20 million refurbishment is breathing new life into this historic estate, seamlessly blending its storied past with the comforts and elegance of the modern era. Every detail of this restoration has been inspired by the house’s heritage, original features lovingly preserved, new designs crafted with respect, and spaces reimagined to honour the vision of those who built and loved this home before us.

A House that Welcomes You Home

The porte-cochère stands, offering shelter to guests arriving in the rain, just as it did nearly two centuries ago. The warmth of the lobby invites you in, with soft amber hues and a whisper of history in every corner. The new library, once a place for grand storytelling, continues that tradition, walls adorned with artwork inspired by Lord Blantyre’s travels, the fireplace crackling, and a whisky glass waiting to be filled.

The Gardens and the Gallery: A Celebration of Past and Present

Outside, the gardens continue to flourish, with century-old trees standing as guardians of Mar Hall’s past. Inside, the Long Gallery offers a space that is both vibrant and reflective, where art, conversation, and quiet contemplation find equal footing. The bar, a sculpted masterpiece of stone and brass, sits at the heart of it all, a place to linger, to laugh, to savour the moment.

A Toast to the Future

The new Mar Hall is more than just a restoration; it is a revival of spirit. This is a house that remembers, a place where history and modern luxury intertwine effortlessly. As we open our doors to a new era, we invite you to walk through the halls, to share in the stories, and to become a part of the next chapter of Mar Hall’s journey.

After all, some places aren’t just visited, they are lived in, loved, and cherished.
